COLUMBUS, Ohio — City council agreed Monday night to spend more than $8 million to transform one block of S. Front Street into a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly thoroughfare.
Construction work is expected to begin within a few months, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported. Updated sewers and wheelchair ramps, decorative street lights and granite curbs are included in the work, which will involve the block between W. Town and W. Rich streets.
"Nowadays we want people to linger Downtown," said Councilmember Maryellen O'Shaughnessy. "We want people to spend money Downtown. We want them to stay."
As part of the transformation plan, S. Front Street will also become a two-way street. The street will remain open to traffic during construction.
Construction work is scheduled to be completed within three years.
